Overview

Taking a Payment

Click "Pay with Card" in your Point of Sale system to start a payment. Once the POS displays "Present card", ask the customer to present his/her card. Instruct the customer how to present his card:

  • If the card has a chip, ask them to insert the card
  • If the card has no chip and a magnetic stripe only, ask them to swipe the card
  • If the card has contactless capability or the customer has a contactless enabled device such as an iPhone with ApplePay, ask them to tap it onto the e355's display.

Insert a card

To insert a chip card:

  1. Slide the card into the card slot with the chip forward and facing you.
  2. Do not remove the card until instructed to so on the display.

Swipe a card

To swipe a card:

  1. Position the card with the magnetic stripe facing away from you.
  2. Swipe the card across the magnetic stripe reader

Tap a card or a mobile device

To tap a card or a mobile device:

  1. Hold the card or the mobile device against the contactless antenna above the display
  2. Once the four contactless lights are lit up and you hear a beep, remove the card

Check the result of a transaction and print a receipt

After a transaction, your Point of Sale system displays the result. The receipt printer prints the cardholder and the merchant receipt:

  1. Hand the cardholder receipt to the customer
  2. Check if the merchant receipt has a line to put a signature.
    1. If the merchant receipt has a signature line, hand the merchant receipt to the customer to obtain his or her signature.
    2. Make sure the customer's signature matches the signature on the card. In case the customer disputes the transaction, you will need to display the signature as proof.
    3. If the signature matches, store the receipt.
    4. If the signature does not match, ask the customer for another means of payment and reverse the transaction.

Reverse a Payment

A transaction can only be reversed on the day it was made. When reversing a transaction, the cardholder will not see any charges on his or her credit card statement.

To reverse a transaction, click "Reverse" in your Point of Sale software. The cardholder's card is not required for a reversal.

Refund a Payment

A Payment can be refunded if the goods are returned.

To refund a payment, initiate a return in your Point of Sale software, then select "Return on Card". Proceed as if taking a payment. The money will be refunded onto the card that's presented.

Abort a Transaction

There are two ways to abort an ongoing transaction:

  • Press the  button labelled "Abort" in your Point of Sale System.
  • Press the  button on your Verifone e355.

A transaction cannot be aborted once the payment details have been sent to the cardholder's bank.

Use the Scanner

Your Verifone e355's scanner is currently not enabled.

Charge the e355

Charge the e355 by connecting it to a wall socket.

  • A complete charge from a standard wall socket takes about 3 hours.
  • The reader's battery lasts for up to 9 hours in idle mode.
  • The reader's battery lasts for approximately 500 transactions.

Turn the e355 on/off

  • To turn the reader on, press the  button for about 10 seconds.
  • To turn the reader off, press the  button for about 10 seconds. Ignore the beep sounds. Once the reader displays "Shutdown", you can release the  button.

The reader will not turn off when the USB cable is attached and the reader is charging. Unplug the reader and try turning it off again.

Handle error messages

The e355 displays "Low range"

This means the e355 cannot connect to the Wifi, or the Wifi strength is too low. Try moving the e355 into an area with stronger Wifi. If this does not help, check if your Wifi is up.

The e355 displays "Low battery"

This means that the e355's battery level is below 15%. You cannot process transactions with low battery due to the risk that the reader may turn off during a transaction. Connect the reader to power supply to keep processing transactions.
